How to Add NordVPN to Firewalla Gold

Overview

For this tutorial, I am going to use an iPhone 13 Pro, running iOS 16.5.1 (c) and using Firewalla Box version 1.9760 (a5437352).

This tutorial will assume that you have a Firewalla Gold with the App connected and already have a subscription to NordVPN.

Firewalla App

Open the Firewalla App and select your device.

If the VPN Client is not visible, scroll down and select More.

Scroll down to the disabled section and select VPN Client.

Select Create VPN Connection.

Select 3rd-Party VPN.

Log into the NordVPN Dashboard, choose NordVPN on the left, and then Set up NordVPN manually.

Add the NordVPN Service Credentials to the Firewalla App.

Now we need to download the OpenVPN client configuration files. NordPVN suggests using the following server utility.

I am in the United States, so I am going to download an OpenVPN profile from there. Select Show available profiles to see the options.

I am going to try the OpenVPN UDP profile first so I am downloading that.

I am going to transfer the file to my iPhone via iCloud, but you could use a computer and a cable if you did not download it from your phone or AirDrop it, even. Select Import Profile from the Firewalla App and choose the profile that was downloaded.

Select Save in the Firewalla App. This will return us to the VPN Client window. We can see that the VPN is off by default. Since I want to use this on my Apple TV, I can choose just that device, or I could choose a whole network.

Bonus Content

Since I would like to watch media only available in other countries, I can create an additional VPN Connection on the Firewalla, but this time, download and add an OpenVPN profile for the country you want to establish the connection to. Follow the steps above, just add a new name for the Firewalla VPN Client Connection.
