Welcome to Bits, Bytes, & Radio Waves — a personal space where I document projects, lessons learned, and experiments across technology, systems, and amateur radio.
At its core, this site reflects how I work: designing complex systems and making them understandable, operable, and sustainable over time. I write things down so I don’t have to rediscover them later, and so others can benefit from solutions that are already tested and clearly explained.
My name is Aaron Rombaut. I hold a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Technology from the Rochester Institute of Technology, and I’ve spent my career working with infrastructure, virtualization, networking, and systems engineering. I enjoy understanding how systems behave end-to-end and documenting that understanding in a way that’s practical and reusable.
In my current role, I spend a significant amount of time architecting complex systems and translating them into plain language so they can be understood, discussed, and implemented effectively. Just as important, I work closely with others through mentorship and relationship-building, helping teams gain confidence in both the technology and the decisions they’re making. That habit of breaking complexity into something approachable naturally carries over into how and why I write here.
I retired from the United States Air Force in 2020. The Air Force core values — Integrity First, Service Before Self, and Excellence In All We Do — still influence how I approach technology, learning, problem-solving, and the relationships I build today. That emphasis on excellence shows up in how I document systems: clearly, carefully, and with repeatability in mind.
This site is intentionally hands-on. Many posts are written as I build, test, or refine something in real time. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s clarity. The result is a collection of notes, guides, and reference material shaped by real-world use rather than theory alone.
Outside of Work
Outside of work, I’m an active amateur radio operator, which naturally overlaps with my interest in networking, RF systems, and experimentation. You’ll see that blend reflected throughout the site.
If you’re here to explore, learn, or sanity-check an idea, I’m glad you found your way here.
